Description
Arteether (Alpha-Beta Arteether) is an artemisinin-derivative antimalarial administered by intramuscular injection for the treatment of malaria. It provides an injectable artemisinin option for hospital and emergency use in malaria-endemic settings.
BioGalen manufactures Arteether Injection as a 150mg/2ml presentation under WHO-GMP conditions, supplied to importers, hospitals, government tenders, and health programmes across malaria-endemic markets.
Mechanism of Action
Arteether is a lipid-soluble artemisinin derivative. In common with other artemisinins, its active form generates reactive free radicals through interaction with the iron released during the parasite's digestion of haemoglobin, causing oxidative damage to parasite proteins and membranes and rapid parasite clearance. Its lipid solubility makes it suitable for intramuscular depot administration, providing an injectable artemisinin option for clinical settings where injectable therapy is indicated.
Indications
- Treatment of malaria where injectable therapy is indicated
- Injectable artemisinin option for hospital and emergency use
- Malaria in endemic regions of Africa and Asia
