Description

Albendazole is a broad-spectrum anthelmintic (deworming) medicine central to soil-transmitted helminth control programmes. It is listed on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines.

BioGalen manufactures Albendazole as an oral suspension (200 mg/5 ml), suited to paediatric deworming and school-based campaigns, and we supply at scale to importers, distributors, government tenders, and NGO and donor-funded programmes.

Mechanism of Action

Albendazole is a benzimidazole anthelmintic that binds to beta-tubulin in the parasite and inhibits microtubule polymerisation. This disrupts the worm's glucose uptake and energy metabolism, depleting its glycogen stores and leading to immobilisation and death of the parasite. Because it is selective for parasite tubulin and poorly absorbed systemically, it acts effectively within the gut against a broad range of helminths with a wide safety margin.

Indications

  • Soil-transmitted helminth infections (roundworm, hookworm, whipworm)
  • Mass drug administration and routine deworming
  • Pinworm (enterobiasis) infection
  • Other parasitic worm infections (as directed)

Available Variants

  • Albendazole Oral Suspension 200mg/5ml
