Description
Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole agent with a distinctive dual role against both protozoal infections and anaerobic bacteria. It is listed on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines.
BioGalen manufactures Metronidazole as an oral suspension (200 mg/5 ml). Its dual antiprotozoal and anti-anaerobic role gives it broad demand across community and programme channels.
Mechanism of Action
Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole that is selectively taken up by anaerobic bacteria and protozoa. Inside these organisms its nitro group is reduced to reactive intermediates that damage DNA and inhibit nucleic acid synthesis, killing the cell. Because this reduction occurs only in low-oxygen environments, Metronidazole is selectively active against anaerobes and protozoa while sparing aerobic human cells, giving it its characteristic dual antiprotozoal and anti-anaerobic activity.
Indications
- Amoebiasis and giardiasis
- Anaerobic bacterial infections
- Dental and oral infections
- Bacterial vaginosis and trichomoniasis
- Intestinal and dental anaerobic infections
