Description

Cefpodoxime Proxetil is a third-generation oral cephalosporin offering a balanced spectrum against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms, widely used in respiratory tract infections and otitis media. It is listed on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines.

BioGalen manufactures Cefpodoxime Proxetil as a paediatric dry syrup (50 mg/5 ml and 100 mg/5 ml on reconstitution). Its suitability for otitis media and paediatric respiratory infections makes it an important paediatric antibiotic across the markets we serve.

Mechanism of Action

Cefpodoxime Proxetil is a prodrug ester of cefpodoxime, a third-generation cephalosporin. After oral absorption it is hydrolysed to active cefpodoxime, which inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding penicillin-binding proteins. It offers the Gram-negative reach of a third-generation cephalosporin together with useful Gram-positive activity, giving it a balanced spectrum well suited to community-acquired respiratory infections.

Indications

  • Community-acquired respiratory tract infections
  • Otitis media (middle ear infection)
  • Pharyngitis and tonsillitis
  • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Uncomplicated urinary tract infections

Available Variants

  • Cefpodoxime Proxetil Dry Syrup 50mg/5ml
  • Cefpodoxime Proxetil Dry Syrup 100mg/5ml
