Description
Cephalexin is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic and a long-established workhorse for skin, soft tissue, and respiratory infections. It is listed on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines and remains one of the most widely prescribed oral cephalosporins in primary care.
BioGalen manufactures Cephalexin as a paediatric dry syrup (125 mg/5 ml and 250 mg/5 ml on reconstitution). Its established safety, oral dosing, and affordability make it a high-volume primary-care antibiotic across the markets we serve.
Mechanism of Action
Cephalexin is a first-generation cephalosporin that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins, disrupting the cross-linking of peptidoglycan and causing cell lysis. As a first-generation agent it has strong activity against Gram-positive organisms such as staphylococci and streptococci, with more limited Gram-negative coverage. Its reliable oral absorption and well-established safety profile make it a dependable choice for common community-acquired infections.
